My reflections…
Imagine… it’s 4am, it’s dark outside and you’re in a deep sleep.
CRACK… I groggily went to the window – had a tree cracked? I tried to adjust my vision to absorb that a wall of mud was sliding rapidly toward my home.
At first, I tried to put chairs up against the sliding glass bedroom doors as if that was really going to stop the mud from breaking through the glass. But within moments, the entire door was ripped right off by the force of the mudslide. Over the next few hours on that fateful Monday morning, all I could do was watch helplessly as the mud overwhelmed my backyard patio and ultimately crashed through a bedroom window.
As of today, six TONS of mud has been removed from my bedroom alone. Next week there are four more days of rain forecasted. There is 5 feet of mud, dirt and debris right outside. Will a tarp hold up to that?
I have lived in my beloved Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles, neighborhood for over 20 years and now my home is gone. Join me for the journey to restoration. There will be pain points at every turn (insurance, remediation, moving out, expense after expense) but there are also sprinkles of joy. I have been deeply moved by the support of friends. The road ahead is a very long one. Watch this space as I try to share it all because this is more than I can do on my own.
Love –

“We put chairs up against the sliding glass doors as if that was really going to stop the mud from breaking through the glass,” I told KTLA 5 News. “But within moments, the entire door was ripped right off by the force of the mudslide.”
Over the next few hours on that fateful Monday morning, all I could do was watch helplessly as the mud overwhelmed my backyard patio and ultimately crashed through a bedroom window. My home hasn’t been “red-tagged” yet by officials, but the fire department warned me to be prepared to evacuate at a moment’s notice.
My house is among the first to be damaged by the historic atmospheric river storm that has been dumping rain nonstop on Southern California since Sunday, February 3rd. More than 6 inches of rain fell in the Baldwin Hills area on Monday, one of the highest totals so far. Mudslides have also been reported in Beverly Glen and Studio City, and flooding on streets and highways is widespread across the region.
Join me on a tour of my home.
Demolition is about to begin so pull up a chair and take a look at what I am facing…

I look back now wistfully at the home that I created with so much love. I think about the people, the entertaining, the warmth, the respite – don’t ever take that for granted. Enjoy the little things because you never know when it could all change.
